What is a Pedodontist (Pediatric Dentist) ?
It is a dentists who has been trained in the field of Pedodontics after graduating from School of Dentistry.
What do Pedodontists do? How do they do it?
Pedodontists may administer all kinds of dental treatment to a child patient :
· They turn dental treatment into a game for children by applying the most suitable examination and treatment techniques. As a result, the children do not have any dental fear.
· They determine the cavity risk group and apply preventive-protective procedures (fissure sealant, local flouride administration) accordingly.
· They follow up the teething process and chin development during development-growth period and prevent malocclusion of teeth with preventive orthodontic treatment.
· When permanent teeth is missing, dental prostheses are applied and aesthetic look and biting are improved.
· They administer dental treatment for children who need special care.
Why should I consult a pedodontist for my child’s oral-dental health?
Children are not “young adults”. During childhood, children display different growth-development characteristics than adults such as fast metabolism. Similarly, the structures of the milk teeth and newly erupted permanent teeth are quite different from the teeth of an adult. Therefore, pedodontists have the most extensive knowledge about children’s oral health.
When should my child receive its first dental examination?
It is recommended to receive the first dental examination after the eruption of the first tooth (6 month-1 year old). During the early dental examination, correct oral hygiene education is given, the dietary habits are planned and information is provided to prevent cavities. In this way, tooth decays are prevented during infancy. With regular tooth examinations planned by your pedodontist, non-decayed and healthy teeth are ensured in the long term.
